The New 20Mhz Version of the Warp-13A is now the only one sold by Dontronics.

We get these units from the factory as they come off the line, as we are 30 miles away, so you can be assured of the latest versions. In fact we are in constant phone contact with the designer, so please don't let other dealers convince you that theirs is the only version that is current.

We normally ship next business day after receiving your order, so you may find that you will get it quicker than many local suppliers. See: http://www.dontronics.com/reco.html for typical supply times.

The WARP-13 is truely MPLAB compatible. It  can integrate with MPLAB in exactly the same way as the PICSTART PLUS. In fact, MPLAB thinks that it is talking to a PICSTART PLUS!

That’s right! Tthe inbuilt picstart plus driver also drives the WARP-13. Please do not be fooled by other programmer vendors claiming MPLAB compatibility. What they mean is that thier programmer is compatible with the output HEX file only but you have to use thier own driver to use thier programmer as, unlike the WARP-13, it is not driven directly from MPLAB itself.

As well as MPLAB compatibility, the WARP-13 is supported by a more powerful proprietary programmer protocol and our own WARP13.EXE driver.  Our own custom driver that offers great improvements in support over MPLAB including more options, far better programmer speed and much greater ease of use.

In fact Only programmers supplied by NEWFOUND ELECTRONICS can offer the flexibility of both MPLAB intergration or the use of a more powerful proprietary programmer protocol.

The WARP-13 features an on board connector suitable for connection to odd pin out devices like the 14000  and the 16C92x Quad pack parts. Many users are successfully using this as a ISP port and are successfully doing ICSP with the WARP-13 even though this was not what the connector was for.

In addition to supporting a whole range of PIC parts, the WARP-13 offers bonus support for SPI, uWire and I2C Serial EEPROMs.

Built on a quality double sided plate-though hole PCB, the WARP-13 is neat and robust and will serve you well over a long period of time.

The WARP-13 is an excellent programmer to fill the gap between the low end cheaper programmers and the quite costly PICSTART PLUS. With MPLAB compatibility as an option the WARP-13 is now better than ever a great choice for your PIC programmer.

    FEATURES:
    • Low cost PIC programmer for all 12C, 12F, 14C, 16C5x, (16F5x pending) 18Cxxx, 18Fxxx   PICs.
    • MPLAB compatible.
    • Free software updates via web site.
    • Windows 9x/ME/XP software.

    WARP-13 WILL PROGRAM THESE PICS:

The following PICs (and more) are supported by the WARP-13 hardware. Almost all are supported by MPLAB but a few will require the native WARP-13 driver as the WARP-13 shares the same restrictions with MPLAB as the PICSTART Plus does when fitted with firmware 3.11.

    PIC16C52 • PIC16C55 • PIC16C57 • PIC16C54 • PIC16C55A • PIC16C57C • PIC16C54A • PIC16C56 • PIC16CR57B • PIC16C54B • PIC16C56A • PIC16CR57C • PIC16C54C • PIC16CR56A • PIC16C58A • PIC16CR54A • PIC16C58B • PIC16CR54B • PIC16CR58A • PIC16CR54C • PIC16CR58B PDIP, SOIC*, Windowed CERDIP
    16HV540

(All the above PICs require either the 18-pin Zif or 28-pin auxiliary ZIFs to be fitted. These are parallel programmed chips and do not support ISCP over 5-wires. Many PIC programmers don't program ANY of the above devices.)

At under a $100USD less than the cost of the PICSTART PLUS, and as a much improved design over "cheap" programmer kits, (Which in fact aren't much lower in cost when you "read the fine print" and pay the software registration fee...) NEWFOUND ELECTRONICS is proud to bring you this powerful cost saving tool.

    THE WARP-13 WINDOWS SOFTWARE

Our own Windows 95/98/ME/XP software is available free of charge and it is useful for programming all the supported PICs and all the supported serial EEPROMs. This software offers many advanced features but is extremely simple to use. Our online help file and extensive use of “tool tips” guide both beginners and even advanced users though some of the tricky and difficult to remember PIC settings.

A good number of time saving options are built into our software and with the constant development it is designed to serve you well into the future.

A screen shot of our software is available for you to look at but you will need to download it to see for yourself the range of features and options it offers..

DOWNLOAD and Test drive the WARP-13 software here

    INSTALLING the WARP-13  INTO MPLAB

The WARP-13 PIC programmer is identical to the PICSTART PLUS as far as all communication protocols are concerned. MPLAB considers the WARP-13 to be a PICSTART PLUS and as such there is no separate software to install. Getting the WARP-13 to work with MPLAB may be as simple as a mouse click.

To install the WARP-13 programmer into MPLAB click on the "PICSTART PLUS" menu and then select "ENABLE Programmer."

If either of the above menu options are disabled or "grayed out" then MPLAB has been installed without the PICSTART plus support files. In this case MPLAB must be reinstalled with the PICSTART plus support files.

To include the PICSTART plus support files run the MPLAB setup program (see microchip documentation for details.) When the "SELECT COMPONENTS" screen is displayed, ensure the "PICSTART plus support files" option is ticked. This is all that is required. Continue with and finish the MPLAB installation and MPLAB will now be ready to drive your NEWFOUND WARP-13 PIC programmer!

Note, there are differences between the picstart plus and the WARP-13, The placement of the 8 and 14-pin pics is different and the WARP-13 does not support the same range of PICs in the one programming socket. The 16C5x family are not programmed in the onboard 40-pin Zif (they use the auxiliary sockets) and the 14000 is supported only via the auxcillary port.

*Price includes the serial cable and one 40-pin ZIF socket suitable for all serial programmable PICs (except the 14000). You will need to provide your own power supply suitable for the country you live in A wall wart that can supply 12VAC or 17-22VDC  @200mA is ideal. The WARP-13 power connector is a 2.1mm DC power socket and is not polarity sensitive due to the full bridge rectification onboard the WARP-13.

All software and documentation is to be downloaded from the web, it is not supplied with the programmer so you will also need to download NEWFOUND ELECTRONICS WARP-13 driver (if you prefer to use it instead of MPLAB) and help file.

Sat, 7 Feb 2004 Subject: CCS to Warp13 Program From:   "Brian Lonnon" lonnon at tiscali.co.uk

Hi Don, The program is called CCSWARP.exe. Use the following string in PCW
    Tools->Options->Device Programmer
    d:\pcw\ccswarp.exe d:\warp\warp13\warp13.exe %H -%D
where d: is the drive PCW and Warp are on and pcw their directory. Edit as needed.
The first part is the path to ccswwarp.exe, the second the path to warp13.exe
PCW sends device as PICxxxxxx whereas Warp13 wants just xxxxxx, so this
program strips off the PIC bit

I agree with Peter. I'm also another Warp-13 user, choosing this particular programmer because it's compatible with MPLAB, emulating the PIC Start Plus. It was also cheaper, (Jim quotes a saving of 60% over a PIC Start Plus) which makes it more attractive to the hobbyist on a tight budget.

    Hi Don,
Just to let you know that I received the Warp-13 programmer this morning. 4 days for a package from Australia to Northern Ireland isn't bad, is it?!

Thank you very much for your prompt service. I hope to do business with you again in the future.

I didn't think the PICStart + was worth the money, but I found the Newfound Electronics WARP-13 which emulates the PICStart Plus so well it integrates into MPLAB (a wonderful FREE product) as a PICStart Plus.  This combo is a dream to use, fully integrated into the IDE and all accessable from the same set of menus.
The support is very good with it too.

Having used MPLAB/WARP-13 and the cheesy parallel port/Bojan Dobaj freeware programmers, there is no comparison.  The more costly stuff allows me to get the work done without having to be an expert in troubleshooting buggy hardware/software with weird DOS interfaces.

    IMO, YMMV, DLC

    FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions)

The extra two ZIF socket positions on the Warp-13 board are for the very first PIC micros in the PIC16Cxx family, namely the 16C52, and 54 to 58 devices. Not many people use these today, however the blank positions have been added to complete the 16 family. ZIF sockets can be soldered to these fairly easily, as the board is fully solder masked.

This programmer requires an external power supply of 12VAC or 16VDC. It has a diode bridge on the input, so it accepts both AC and DC. The input Jack size is 2.1mm
Any plug pack, or wall wart that will supply 100ma or more will suit this unit.
If you can find an old Notebook computer power supply, these are usually 18 to 20V DC, and can be had for a song at disposal stores.

The port on the right hand side of the picture is the ISP Port.
These 5 pins running from top to bottom are: VDD, GND, VPP, RB7, RB6.
Details for interfacing to a PICmicro chip can be found at:

    Windows NT
If the Warp 13 looks like a PicStart Plus, then there is a surmountable issue when running on dual processor WinNT. The details and fix are in the
PicStart Plus Readme file. I have found this info in both MPLAB 5.40 and 5.50 PicStart Plus readme files. It may also be in earlier files.

The Warp-13 has been tested by the manufacturer to work with our: EasySync USB to RS-232 Converter.

Warp-13 Price includes Airmail World Wide Postage and Serial Cable:
    ($119USD)
The above with an EasySync Laptop Companion USB to RS-232 Converter:
    ($154USD)

That is a $5USD saving on normal pricing for the combination, and the converter can be used for other RS-232 devices when the Warp-13 is not in use.

Yes, this may work on a MAC with a USB port, but it needs someone to try it. :-)

Note *** You will still need to power the Warp-13A from a standard power source, and not the USB port, as there is no power available from the DB-9 connector on the converter.

    Warp-13 on a MAC:

    Sun, 05 Oct 2003 Rick L
Greetings, A while back I purchased a WARP 13A Programmer along with the Easy-Sync USB to RS 232 Cable. Note that I am a Mac user and I don't own a PC. Thus, I am running Virtual PC 7 (Windows 2000 version)  on my Mac which is running MaC OSX 10.2.6. I am writing to let you know that the WARP 13A and the Easy-Sync Cable work PERFECTLY with this setup. It only took a few minutes to get the WARP13A talking with MPLAB!  Note that the 'serial port' shows up as COM3 and this needs to be changed in MPLAB; MPLAB defaults to COM1 So, there you have it, you CAN use a Mac with the WARP13A, the Easy-Sync Cable, and VIrtual PC
