Subject: New PicBasic CodeDesigner

CodeDesigner is an advanced Windows 95/98/NT/2000 based integrated
development environment (IDE) for the
PicBasic and PicBasic Pro Compilers from microEngineering Labs, Inc.
CodeDesigner has many of the advanced editor features found in Visual
Basic.

Features like Auto Code Completion, pop-up statement syntax, and
PicBasic statement sensitive help will speed project development. Reduce
time spent hunting down errors with CodeDesigner's ability to quickly
navigate error lines, highlight errors, and display error descriptions.

Hi Don,
Thanks for the sockets and SIMs. Also thanks for the prompt delivery. Will
Pbasic code designer intergrate with MPLAB?

Hi John,
sure, no problems.

CodeDesigner is designed only to work only in conjunction with the mEL
family of PIC Basic. This doesn't relate readily to assembly code using
MPLAB, as you can only call assembly routines in line.

I have the DT-001 programmer and the mEL PicBasic Pro compiler (PBP)

I need software to bridge the gap between the intel HEX file that the PBP
makes and the hardware.
Can anyone recommend a good source.

I find the Dontronics pages so incredibly time consuming and muddle headed
that I just give up when trying to decide which to use.

I don't know why some of your customers/site visitors need to be so nasty in

I think we have all been guilty of that Len, if we haven't, we will be
some time in the future. :-)

Just a little info on the site.
It did evolve from a single promo disk I distributed originally (5.25"
circa 1985?). It now covers well over 50meg, and is still basically done
by the one person, my salesman. (Hi Don!)

I have been through several stages of modernization, and in Feb this
year, decided to go in for a shopping cart, and went and purchased a
version of shopfactory.com, as they appeared to be as close as I could
get to what I wanted, and i would get someone to fine tune it for me.

The man I contracted to do the work for me, spent 7 to 8 weeks and
didn't have a line of code to show me when i terminated his services,
this cost me also.

Shop factory is an australian company, so i was pleased to go with the
locals, but they let me down completely, and their version of support
was to answer a question with a question, but only once a week and at 1
week intervals would they give this so called support. Their promises of
interfacing me to an Australian bank was only a promise, they couldn't
do this either.

I demanded and finally got my money back.

Thanks to a customer, Laurent Bourdette of Tahiti for teaching me how
easy javascript was to work with. he set up an initial template for the
currency conversion for me, and i got an off the shelf free shopping
cart script and a little assistance from the author Dave Gibson Editor,
Cut-N-Paste Java scripts http://www.infohiway.com/javascript/ I was able
to get a shopping cart working.

This has taken up all my spare time in the last 2 months, so I'm just
getting it into some organized shape now, and perhaps i haven't
advertised the new front door readily, as i have been building around
it.
http://www.dontronics.com/cat_index.html

I have had many offers of assistance. The one about 6-8 months ago was
from a technical writer and DonTronics customer, who said he would
rewrite all my technical pages starting at dt001. I agreed and said i
would provide all boards and parts he needed to do this.

I honestly have forgotten his name now, (couldn't be bothered looking in
my archives) and he may well be reading this message, but again I never
saw a single line of code.

I have had many people want to swap goods for html code, but I always
seemed to be let down sooner or later, and as such, have elected to go
it alone.

Mind you, I have had some very useful contributions, it hasn't been all
news bad. Robert Severson not only put together the DT209 page, he and
his organization put together the whole dt209 project, and presented it
to me, or at least the SimmStick community, at zero cost.

James newton of Piclist.com is doing all the conversions of the scott
edwards source to microchip code, as the stuff i generated was full of
errors, he is about 3/4 of the way through this at the moment.

I always try to encourage customers to give me feedback and assistance
if they can.
I don't mind constructive criticism, and if anyone thinks my pages are a
bit of a mess now, should have seen it all about 2 years ago. :-)

The shopping cart, currency exchange, board quantity discounts, postage,
and Australian GST is all built into the cart now, the way I wanted it.
the $6AUD off for 4 boards isn't, and would require a lot of coding the
way the system is built, so I do the small amounts of these orders by
hand. The 5, 10, and 100 quantity prices are now automatic.

You will need javascript and cookies switched on to use it however. Most
large companies have this requirement now.

I retired from full time work about 9 months ago, and have been putting
a lot more into the pages. mind you, it has to be a balance between
earning enough out of it to live on, and giving visitors some reasonable
reading value when they pay a visit.

Cheers Don...

I'm trying to program PIC16F877 on a DT106 (via DT001) board.
Below is the test program (Hitech-C) and corresponding HEX file.
I'm using P16PRO programmer SW. P16PRO displays "Configuration word is not

Questions:
(1) Is there anything wrong in C code?
(2) Is there any option in Hitech-C that I'm supposed to select not to get

P16PRO?
(3) Is there any other program (preferebly Windows program) other than
P16PRO to program PIC16F877 (without any code size limit) on Dontronics'
DT106+DT001 boards?
(4) Thanks..

Hi Albert, I noticed you also put all of these questions to the piclist,
so to save anyone else going to the trouble here, could i suggest you
put general pic questions to the piclist. You will get the best response
there, as i notice you have got already. Maybe you also posted to the
news groups. I haven't looked yet.

Not very long ago, you posted multiple messages to the news groups
regarding a product of mine not working, and i had to come along behind
and patch the holes up, to let people know that it wasn't the product,
as you had posted individual messages to different groups. I got no
response back from you on this occasion.

This makes it very difficult for me.

If someone posts to this group, and they don't get an answer, I go to a
lot of trouble to get them the best answer I can, if it is about
SimmStick.

I hope other members of this group may be able to help you with your
questions, but I'll wait and monitor the Piclist for results before i go
to the trouble this time.

If you are still short on answers after a week, please just ask this
group, and we will do our best to assist.

Hi Chris, I wrote that, so I better explain.

This is the Q&A given on the special I/O lines:
==============================================
What are the 3 special I/O lines used for?
A1, A2, and A3 are User defined. They can be a card select, Video
In/Out, whatever you care to make it for your project. We have used it
for alternative RS-232 on some boards.

Then Note 1:
===========
Note 1 *** We feel the most misused, abused, and never used pins are the
clock lines. Should never have come out at all. The guru did make a
mistake here. As we redesign boards, we will remove these tracks, but it
could be years now of course before it filters through. Have added the
alternative pin designations A4 and A5. Scenix Micros use the clock
lines for programming, so these may need to be routed via the "A" lines
or perhaps a programming header.

This means A4 and A5 are now special I/O lines and can be user defined.
If you want to use them as a clock line on your design, then it is fine
for your own use.
If you wanted to use it in a production unit, then i would assume you
would be supplying two cards, and users would need that line connected
and free from other signals.

The main reason for removing the clock from those lines is simple. You
shouldn't be running clocks all over the place as these should be kept
as short as possible, that is a resonator or crystal circuit should be
the shortest possible distance between itself and the micro. If a clock
is oscillator or "TTL" driven, then running between boards isn't a real
problem.

If you need to run the clock from one slot to the next, it will work in
most cases, but not advised. For the sake of a cheap clock source, it
may be better to put crystals/resonators on each module.

If two micros need to be "synched" with each for some reason, then this
isn't possible of course.

Any mother board can also be user configured or custom built to match in
with standard SimmStick modules also. It can be very simple to
manufacture a motherboard using a single sided board, with any cross
over lines needed, and even additional circuitry to support your
SimmStick modules.

Cheers Don...

Hi there Don,

With respect to our communication that we had regarding Bascom booklet,
I am informing you that translations of the book are done. Also Mark
Alberts has checked them.

Translations were done by the professionals however, we would like a
native speaker - person who is involved with microcontrollers and stuff
like that, to check that out.

We have had in mind your idea, to include also Bascom-8051 in the
booklet.
So the booklet can be used either for the BascomLT (applies in some
countries) and for the Bascom-8051 users as well.

Please let me know, if you would be prepared to help with that.

Best regards
Jure

Hi Gang, just got this email from Jure Mikeln of Slovenia, I think it
really speaks for itself, Jure has offered me some small financial
compensation, but i am really pushing for time these days, and have told
Jure, I will do my best to get someone to help out.

I someone is interested in assisting, I'm sure something can be worked
out. It isn't a large book, a booklet really.

Jure

thanks Mick, i already have one, perhaps two people now to have a look
at it.

it's amazing, I push things for a long time and wonder if I am talking
to myself, sometimes items quickly pick up as users are interested.

It can be hard to judge.

Thanks again, but I do believe we could have two users working on it
now.
However I'll cc this to jure also

Cheers Don...

Hi Don,
If the Bascom booklet is in soft form I would like to proof read it and compare my result with those who probably know better.
I find that I am asked to write technical notes at work these days and it's not as easy as I thought and more practice must help me and it may be useful generally.
Cheers,

Hi Leon, thanks
again, I think Jure is OK on this now, however I'll CC this to him with
your email address.

If anyone else wants to offer assistance, if you can please contact Jure
directly thanks.

Strange, I have little projects like dt107, and I can't get any feedback
at all. :-)

Cheers Don...

Hi Len, i figured if you aren't aware, i better pass it by the SimmStick
group so that all are aware.
I was sure I had done this.

http://www.dontronics.com/dt107.html

However, at this stage I have spoken to the people at basicx.com and
Brian Millier, the author of the basicx article in cc Inc, and we are
going to upgrade the dt103 into a dt107.
http://dontronics.com/dt107.html

Brian's schematic is at:
http://dontronics.com/!.jpg

this is basically a cut down version of a basicx-01 board, and matches
in with the direction we are heading with the dt107.

What it means is it gets rid of the old non-used programmer section of
the dt103 (antti's origional idea), and makes the board basicx chip
compatible.

We have the permission of both netmedia and Brian to go ahead with this.
In fact Chris Harriman <chrish@n...> has used SimmSticks in the
past and welcomes this move.

It also means we can use the netmedia Ram Sandwich with this 8515 board.

No 7 pin header, but the rest would be pretty much the same as Brians
cct, however we will use our standard power-up reset circuit, where we
have a transistor inverter, so that non-avr (8051 type) micros can be
used also.

Cheers Don...
