You just beat me to it Rob.

I don't mind anyone advertising an on topic SimmStick subject, in fact I
welcome it. I will tolerate an off topic ad providing it isn't overdone,
but asking for money transfers through this list simply isn't on.

I have worked hard to build this list up, and I don't want to scare
members, or potential members away with this sort of chit chat.

I remind all members that this is a basically a SimmStick group. If you
want to talk way off topic, please take it elsewhere.

That's the nice version. :-)

Cheers Don...

yes i've a design similar to the one described.

it has 6 digit 7seg led display.. can count up and down.. and also with a n constant.. it has a timer function integrated in it for auto reset.. two additional reset inputs are also provided.. one at the front panel of the device and one at the back for connecting an external reset button..

it has got a emergency data save feature.. which saves the count in case of a power failure. when the power is on again, it fetches the saved data from its eeprom memory and continue counting on that value.

it accepts ttl inputs, encoder, proximity etc.
is tested in industrial environment up to 5khz counting frequency..

The controller inside is a sgs thompson st62t25c.

well for sure the pcb board is ready as well as panel type outer case, pvc membrane front panel etc.

the device can be seen at www.kontel.org

with the code Ctr-21..

I can get this stuff from ISO/IEC 10536 but I don't think it is available on

Subject: Ram/rom and memory mapped io subboards?

Hi.

I'm new to simmstick, but have been looking for somthing like this.
But, as far as I can see, the simmstick "bus" definitions does'nt allow for memory mapped devices.

Is there any way around this, or any alternative bus definitions?

Since you mentioned it, and at the risk of getting flamed I will confess
that we have similar issues. We want to add some "standard" for i/o modules
to our development boards, especially embedded Java sockets boards, but the
Simmstick "spec" is not really a spec in the normal sense -- almost all
pins can be (and are) defined differently on different simmstick modules.
It's hard to design in an interface and have most any simmstick just plug
in and work. If we are going to use this, we need to design an interface
which isolates our buses from simmstick so that a simmstick can't hang or
damage our system bus. We don't want our users to have to hack traces on
the board or move a bunch of jumpers around for different modules...

Comments, or better yet, solutions?

One of the problems is the limit of 30 pins on the Simm bus, you will
see we have a 40 pin additional header on the dt106 (PICmicro) and dt107
(AVR) boards.

The dt107 will suit the 8515 and 28 pin avr's. We have already made this
bus basicx ram sandwich compatible.

For easy ram expansion, you may well need a 40 pin micro to do the
interfacing and work.

SimmStick was designed mainly as a single chip computer carrier board
without large memory.

Each bit on the Simm bus has the ability to read or write on an
individual bit by bit basis, so anything designed to work on the Simm
bus should work with any I/O card providing the pin count is similar.

I know there are some up and coming SimmStick designs that include ram
on board, and this may be the simple answer.

BTW
We have 3 new boards that are going to the fab man right now, these are
the dt007, dt107, and dt108.

Cheers Don...

If you want to use a lot of memory then
http://www.users.qwest.net/~oricom/sbc40.htm might be of interest, it isn't
a bus arrangement like SIMMSticks but it certainly lets you pack in the RAM.

The company makes some other interesting products too, well worth a look.

This gets redirected to home.nbci.com and from there? Adding "ctr-21" to

That's right, drop me in it <grin>
Good old Rod, he'll take the blame!

Just spent the day talking to several old RAF/RAAF people about reprinting
some books about various exploits during WW2, escapes, POW's, flying etc.
Amazing stuff to actually talk to the people who did this. One chap was shot
down over the North Sea, sat in a lifeboat for several days and watched the
rest of his crew die alongside him. Was rescued by the Luftwafe ( he claims
he flew with both the RAF and the Luftwafe during the war ), then spent 3.5
years in POW camps.

I've read about these people but it is amazing to actually meet them in the
flesh.

Must be time to wonder of and have a beer and ponder all of this!

RPM readout and Low High alarm design needed.

Microcontroller based RPM to 7-seg LED display design required. Sensor is a
proximity switch which senses teeth on a wheel which may vary from 1 to 100.
Reading need to be displayed in RPM by dividing frequency by number of
teeths and then multiplying by 60 (seconds to minutes). Response time must
be about 100ms and RPM reading +/-1 RPM accurate.

I also need three separate alarms set points. One for low speed, one for
high speed and one for very high speed. All set in RPM.

Not just yet Mike, we will have to get a list of sites that have them,
and Lionel has them in stock and i think will be doing something more
positive.

As a matter of fact i haven't even told lionel i have them yet, as i am
trying to sort out the things I need to do to get away for a few days
over this weekend, so I'll cc this to him.

Cheers Don...

Just mentioned the chip in the previous message Tom, I know the PIC guys
on the PICLIST designed with it, so I hope we can find sources all over.
Nigel Goodwin was doinf a similar board for me a while ago, but he had
all sorts of trouble getting the chip he wanted to use, so we gave it a
miss. As I have now seen several designs with this one, and we have them
in Australia, I figure, we will be able to source them without too much
trouble.

yes, I asked lionel to make it SimmStick bus compatible, which means it
has a reset inverter on board. you simply jumper around Q1 if you use an
AVR chip. See the similar cct for this on dt104 for example.

The problem Henrik is we have asked for months on this and got very
little feedback at all.
You will see the page was first posted in march of this year, and
plugged on a regular basis, so the board is made.

But this is normal.
We get the feedback after the event. :-)

a 1-liner comms bus like i2c would be cool. Plus there are some nice
thermometer chips and stuff for it, so it could be simple as well as cool.

lots of industrial apps could use it too: think a couple of dozen cheap PID
loop thermostats able to act local, but still be polled by 1 device that has
a modem - great cost savings.

BASCOM AVR has IIC commands in it. I assume that you can invoke a IIC bus with two I/O pins of the simstik micro.
am I going to be very dissapointed when I try it?
If it's thermometers you want look at the DALLAs SEMI devices they only require half as many pins and are also featured in the BASCOM command/instruction set
Cheers

Hi Don.

Sorry about that. I have only been attending since Oct 4.

I find that hard to argue with Henrik. :-)
Yes it was unfortunate timing.

What normally takes place is someone comes up with an idea, this can be
me or someone feeding me ideas, or anyone for that matter that wants to
make a SimmStick compatible board.

I then ask the small circle of Dontronics dealers for thoughts/comments,
and when we have it into a schematic and layout format, i then present
it to the SimmStick group for final comments.

Lately the feedback has been good, however I don't think we ever made a
board first time correctly, (unless it was dead simple) so revisions do
take place.

This Video board was designed by Lionel Theunissen and although I
suggested minor changes for SimmStick compatibility, there wasn't a lot
that needed to be altered.

A lot of people have also asked about a basic Stamp II SimmStick. Yes,
this is also a "Go" project and shouldn't be too long. Ben Wirz is doing
this one. http://www.wirz.com/
I recently got his Basic Stamp One compatible. See:
http://www.dontronics.com/stampstick.html

Don't forget the new AVR 2313 stick from Lars at:
http://www.dontronics.com/simm101.html
And to support the programming of these boards, Lars has also designed
the http://www.dontronics.com/dt007.html

Along with the http://www.dontronics.com/dt108.html atmel board, it
means Dontronics will have manufactured 3 new SimmStick designs in one
week. Along with the boards from Ben and Lars, that is 5 new SimmStick
designs in about a 2 to 3 week period.

And now i am going to take a two day break no where near the computer,
to let it all settle until next week.
:-)
