hi,
I found the problem, perhaps someone (or Don) is interested in: the
programmer couldn't work because there was a short cut between signals
RES and B7 on DT106. It must be a defect of the PCB, I could not locate
it. But after isolating signals B7 and B7x at J4 the short cut was
isolated from the 877 and everything works fine since then (Fortunately
I do not need the J1 and LCD-Header). Perhaps you, Don, should have a
look if any other DT106 PCB has the same problem.

thanks for the feedback Frank, sorry you had this trouble.

we get minor manufacturing faults from time to time, which may be
isolated to a single board, or a whole panel. it only takes a piece of
junk to get caught up in the tooling systems to isolate or join a track.

Users on this list that manufacture boards, will know what I mean.

I have had feeback for years now about my boards, and am told they are
the best quality boards around, and I have put many global users on to
this little Australian company. http://www.becman.com/BEC.htm

Hi Don,

Every board I've had from you has been of exceptional quality, my job is
repairing TV and VCR's etc. and I've never seen any boards used in the
domestic electronics industry that are anywhere near as good as yours!.

If I was going to be picky, the very old boards didn't have silk screen
printing, but the boards were still of good quality.

Hi Nigel, thanks.
the very old boards were done by Antti, and produced locally, i think in
Estonia. One of the problems was the fact that they didn't have silk
screen printing, which made it very difficult to assemble. This was one
of the many rasons I did my own boards.

I know antti listens to this list at times.

Subject: HELP ON ULTRALIGHT PROJECT

Greetings from Pakistan.

I am writing to you to elicit advise on the kind of simmstick hardware (and software) required to make the following project. You will kindly appreciate that costs and complexity are serious concerns for us since being from a third world country it is difficult to get resources.

I have some friends who fly ultralight planes. Right now they do not have any instruments to measure airspeed and engine-temp. Because of the constraints mentioned above (cost, difficulty of obtaining materials from abroad due to government regulations) they are essentially flying on "gut feeling". They have asked me to help out in making a system which should give them the above mentioned parameters of the aircraft while it is in the air.

In response I have looked at the Net and found a project which does exactly that (http://www.simmstick.com/Contest99/SSUS0003.ZIP). However this system is more complex as it uses Motorola sensors for pressure sensing to measure speed and has nothing for engine temp.

I would like to make a system where the airspeed is measured through pulses, generated from a small model airplane propeller, wind-milling in the air-stream due to the forward movement of the plane. Temperature of the cylinder-head should also be measurable through a sensor. These two parameters should be displayed on a 1" LED (3 or 4 digits) or LCD display. The display should be toggle-able between the two parameters.

For the future, the system should be expandable to include sensor inputs for altitude and accelerometer input for rate of climb/decent, and display of the same on the above LEDS/LCD.

Please advise whether it is possible to design a system using simmsticks. In order to contain costs ( and develop confidence that it works), the temprature/air-speed system would be built first. Subsequently the altitude/rate of climb capability can be added, with minimum additions/modifications in the hardware. Please indicate also the cost of the first phase and the hardware required.

Regards and Good wishes

Aurangzeb Haque

P.S:- I would appreciate help in contacting some one who has done this kind of a project.

Subject: Ethernet Controller for SimmStick?

Hi Everyone

I've been toying with the idea of creating an 10BaseT Ethernet controller in
a SimmStick format. It would have an onboard PIC to control it and other
Modules would use SPI to communicate with it using a simple command system.

It would allow:
	- ARP, ICMP (ping), DHCP (IP address assignment) maybe.
	- Simple web server
	- "telnet" to "Serial" conversion so you could use a telnet program to
interact with your project.
	- UDP packet send/receive
	- ability to open a TCP/IP connection or receive
	- configure the module through the SPI interface

It would allow you to easily create an internet enabled device. Configurable
via the Web.

For instance:
	- Simple Ethernet -> Serial 'terminal server'
	- Internet Data logger (with PC support to receive data)
	- Internet enabled burglar alarm for those with permanent connections
(cable modems)
	- Web Camera
	- Internet Enable your Coke/Coffee machine

Would anyone be interested in such a beast?

Cheers,
Ash.

This has been experimented with some already. One reasonable route would be to use a Dallas TINI on a board that has a SimmStick socket.

Rob and I discussed this some time ago and never acted on it.

We are at the point where we need to revise our STEP+ TINI socket board:
http://www.systronix.com/tini/step.htm

so we may take the leap here if there is room (with the current SBX and
SIMM72) to add a SIMM30.

We actually have designed a SIMM30 socket (which has some SimmStick
compatability) into a new product which will be released on April 09 at
the embedded systems conference. It mainly uses the SPI and serial I/O pins.

We also are this week finishing up a Simm30 proto board, 2" tall, with SMT
wide and narrow pads, through holes, and copper planes for power and
ground. So it is not the same as any of the existing SIMM30 proto boards of
which we are aware. It has 5x2 header pads and RJ12 pads. It will easily
let you experiment with 1Wire surface mount devices and then wire over to
the RJ12, for example. It will also be released April 09. It will be for
sale as just a bare board as well as part of a new product bundle.

Anyone at the embedded systems conference can see these products at the
aJile booth.

Anyone with input about adding Simmstick to a TINI socket board can email
me on- or off- list.

It is not simmstick based, but it might be worth your while to
check out the SitePlayer board. For $99 for the developer's
kit and $49 in single pc pricing for full eithernet, it just screams
for applications.

In a few days we will have kits of the board with 5x2 right angle headers
and an RJ12 right angle jack.

At the moment the bare boards are in stock.

JSimm is a version of simmstick (tm) Dontronics which is optimized for our

if so this is too cool, i could dump all my personal 16bit counter

This Henri, is what I need to find out also.
The programming setup may be different, so you may need suitable
software.
P16pro by Bojan Dobaj and Newfound's warp-13 have provided it, in fact I
made sure before I got these chips.

I know Nigel Goodwin is on this list, so this may be of interest to you
also Nigel.
If this chip delivers what appears to be in the specs, it will make the
PIC16F84 family obsolete very quickly.

Or have I missed something?

Hi Don,

You've not been checking my website recently :-). I added support for
the 16F628 series early December last year!!.

Someone kindly sent me a sample, and I confirmed it all works OK.

Only to make sure it worked, but as you say it's like a 'grown up'
version of the 16F84, assuming the price is similar it should replace
the 84 series.

Hi:
I am new to AVR. Was wondering if I can use a 2313 on the DT006 board
to a serial display (16 X 1). If so, could someone share a simple
example using Bascom AVR program.
Thank you in advance.

Hardware wise, you will need to hook up the LCD to the dt006 board
perhaps via the 30 pins out the end of the board.

this can be done by getting a vero board and soldering a 30 pin r/a male
connector to it, and attaching the LCD to the board via wires or a crimp
header flat ribbon cable and connectors.

see:
http://www.dontronics.com/simcon.html
right down the bottom of the page for an example of this.

There is some help text in bascom that I think covers the setup, or
perhaps one of the group members can supply some suitable code here.

Hello Mike,

Yes, you can, it is very easy. See the LCD example at SAMPLES Bascom (Avr)
and instructions "config LCD" and "LCD" at the help file

I'm sorry if I am just not catching on, but I am not seeing an example of
using serial out for an LCD in the samples for Bascom AVR. I am familiar
with how to do this with a PIC, but I do not seem to be doing something
right for AVR. Could you share a simple example?

Hi Mike,

You must use something like this:
*********************************
Open "comb.4:9600,8,n,1" For Output As #1
Wait 1
Print #1 , "La temp. es:" ; A
*********************************
But why serial out?

Use "Config LCD" and "LCD" instructions from Bascom-AVR. See also the
samples.

Much more simple than serial communication!!

best regards

Jorge

Ahh!!!

We aren't driving to a serial LCD are we?
something like the serial backpack(R) units. Is this what you did with
PIC's?
In which case, Jorge's example is fine.

Thank you Jorge and Don,

You guessed right, Don- I have a serial backpack display. I wanted to try
Bascom AVR both ways. Appreciate the help.

Hello Mike, Don:

I have already done both cases. My first experience was with Scott Edwards
serial LCD 16*2 and Basic Stamps.

Then I adopted Bascom AVR, and I used my serial LCD with the serial
communication and the 2313 Avr. It works, but there is little problems with
some commands, and also is quite hard to program the serial commands of the
LCD.

Then I tried the LCD "naked" -no serial module- wired to the 2313. This
works GREAT with Bascom instructions, much easier to program and also
cheaper (no serial unity). So use serial only if you have problems with
pinīs quantity, but if you use 8515 or 8535 you have always enough pins.

Best regards

Jorge

Subject: AVR's and LCD's

Hi,

I just tried sending this to avr@yahoogroups.com, and got the following
message:

> Your message was not delivered because it was sent to an

Hmmm... Anyway, hopefully someone on the simmstick list might know how to
help me!
