I think Dave has shut it down.

He has a new majordomo group, but as you have to subscribe, even just to
browse, I decided to use the group at avrfreaks.net

May pay to post there also Ben.
or to the bascom group even.

Just got this message from Lenny Gray:

Subject: 16F628 is _not_ "pin-for-pin" compatible with 16F84
   Date: Wed, 02 May 2001 23:00:59 -0700
   From: Lenny Gray <lenny@
     To: don@d...

Greetings,

It seems that quite a number of things are different, which I'm
just finding out about, one step at a time. First, the RC based
oscillator is gone, though it has other nice oscillator modes
instead. Second, the config bits are different, including those
that specify the oscillator. Next, it was pointed out to me that
available RAM registers on the '84 start at 0Ch, whereas on the
'628 they start at 20h.

As I was enticed into the realm by your web-page, ordered one,
_did_ check the specs but clearly _not_ word-for-word, and just
plugged it into my otherwise working 16f84 circuit (and voila, it
isn't even close to working), I'd say your "pin for pin" statement
is misleading to the point of being counterproductive.

I recommend you change your promo of it to:

"What has twice the memory of a PIC16F84, a real Uart, flash, and
is _SOMEWHAT_ pin for pin compatible, and around the same price?
The PIC16F628-20-P In stock now. Check the Specs."

That might be a sufficient heads-up warning.

- Lenny Gray -

+++++++++++++++++++++++

I thanked Lenny for this and got his approval to post the message.
I also edited my pages to be more imformative about the 628.

+++++++++++++++++++++++

here is a little follow up:

No problem. I'll keep you updated. I've made a bit of progress,
in that I've gotten the config close enough that it at least
blinks my lights. But it's running at a wrong speed, and has
RB4 seemingly acting as an input even though I'm setting it to
be an output.

I may, though, if it all doesn't fall into place, choose to put
this research on "hold", as my project with the '84 is interesting
enough and has enough challenges. 8)

Don,

The red numbers are "new" products for the catalog. IIRC
Jameco dropped the duals, then re-added them. (thus they are
"new")

The blue numbers indicate limited availability.

The black numbers are regular price.

The blurry numbers indicate too much beer.

Cheers!

Usually, it means a discontiued part. They'll sell what they have, but won't
have it after existing stock is sold. I bought some of the sockets a couple
years ago when they said it was a "close-out".

Nope, Ted. In this case it indicates a new product. I have
the catalog open in front of me.

Part No. in Blue Act Fast! Limited Quantities Available.

thanks Rob,
I just got a message back from their sales dept also.
As indicated, on the front inside cover. They are new!
I have the blurry ones too, they said they couldn't see them. :-)

I got them from Jameco (www.jameco.com) part #100301 (single) or #72531

more expensive. The duals are only .19 but are a straight vertical

Hi Guys,

I agree with Bob that the Dual SimmSockets from Jameco are poor
qualtity. DigiKey, Mouser, and all the surplus houses seem
to have a good selection of the sockets. You want to get the ones with
metal latches and make sure they are straight and not
angled ones. One problem is that the qualtity seems to vary widely so
its best to order a few to start with and more if they look
good.

Subject: PIC16F628 wont program!

I am trying to get a program loaded into a PIC16F628, but it just
won't go! Is this chip program compatible with the 16F84? (Other
than the config word). My hardware has been proven on 16F84's. I am
using a DT001 programmer from Dontronics, and Picprog877 by Nigel
Goodwin.

These chips come pre-configured in low voltage mode, does this
exclude them from the usuall high voltage programming ?

The symptoms are the programming fails at the first byte/line. If I
read the contents of the PIC I get all 3FF.

Any tips would be appreciated.

Cheers,
Mal.

I believe the programming algorithm is completely different for the 628

try the demo at:
http://www.dontronics.com/p16pro.html

I tried Nigel's page, but it appears to be under heavy construction
right now, as I couldn't get much more than a search engine to nowhere.

Aha!

Nigel's site is a netscape problem, works fine with Explorer.
yes he has the 628 there, which I thought he had mentioned to me
(getting old), but give the p16pro demo a try, it will burn 256 bytes
only, but it will prove your programmer for suitability for the 628.

Hi Don,

There's no construction work going on at the moment, it must just have
been a busy time, or my ISP may have been having problems - they had the
news servers go down the other day!.

The later version of my software programmes the 16F628, although it
doesn't offer all the fuse settings yet - the next version will do so.

Hi Don,

Have you any idea what Netscape doesn't like? - I'm not using anything
special, the only thing I can think of is the use of 'Include Bots' to
add the menu, header, and footer - but as my ISP doesn't provide
Frontpage Extensions they are simply used to add the parts to the pages
before uploading.

Sorry I can't pinpoint it Nigel, perhaps one of the members can.

all I am getting is:
Nigel's Menu Nigel Goodwin's Website Search

all on one line at the top of the page, and nothing else. I'm using
netscape 4.76
It shows up fine with IE.

Thanks Don, I'll try installing Netscape and see what happens :-).

I've installed Netscape (both 6.01 and 4.7), with 6.01 it works fine,
but with 4.7 it just displays the header like you said :-(.

I've been trying to find out why, and it appears to be the search form I
use, from Atomz.com - I've e-mailed them to see if they can offer any
suggestions.

I use atomz also, but you may be battling to get a reasonable answer.
Mind you, I don't use it in a table.

What I did was go into 4.76, open your page, edit it with the inbuilt
netscape composer, simply put a space as the first chr, then removed it,
and saved it to my hard drive, and it appeared fine.

So it's in the formatting.

Hi Don,

I e-mailed Atomz on Saturday night, and got a helpful reply on Sunday
morning :-). They checked the site and reported that I had a </table>
missing, and that Netscape 4.7 has problems with this.

I've just added the missing </table>, and it works fine now in 4.7 :-).
I'll get the site updated, and upload the files again.

Thanks for the help!.

Subject: Dontronics raver not working

I bought a DT006, prefabricated, from Dontronics. I can't get it to work
at all.

I loaded up Bascom-AVR and made the appropriate changes in the Options
menu. I tried to get it to program the chip. It puts up a window called
'BASCOM-AVR programming status' that stays there. None of the LEDs light
up. If I tell it to read the ROM from the chip, it reads as total FFs.
I once seem to have programmed the first word (2 bytes) of the chip to
'C0', which is the first word in the compiled .bin file, but otherwise I
just can't program the chip. It consistently says 'cannot identify chip'

I've tried a 2313 and a AT90S2343 in the socket.

At one stage I was able to press the switch nearest R5, and get LED10 to
light up. I was able to press the other two switches, and two of the LEDs
(probably 2 and 9) would light up. Now, nothing lights up ever.

Let me describe my settings:

I have dual boot Windows 2000 and also Windows 98. It doesn't work under
either system.

COM port 1
bits per second: 9600
Data bits: 8
Parity: None
Stop Bits: 1
Flow control: None

I have installed Bascom-AVR demo version. Settings are:

Compiler
Chip: 90S2313
HW stack: 16
Soft stack: 0
Framesize: 30

Output: binary, debug, hex, report, error, avr studio, size warning all
selected

Communication: Baudrate 9600 Frequency 10,000,000

Communication
COM Port
Baudrate 9600
Parity None
Databits 8
Stopbits 1
Handshake None
Emulation BBS ANSI

Programmer
Sample Electronics Programmer
parallel LPT-address 378
Serial COM-port 1

I have altered each of these settings with no benefit. I have altered
many of them in combination.

There is one circumstance under which it appears that I can program the
chip. I press 'Erase chip', and it says Chip Erased. I then Read flash
ROM into buffer, and it appears as all zeros. I then write buffer to
Flash ROM, and it 'programs' in about 5 seconds. It verifies okay. I
guess that's an illusion, though.

Now, if I load up a program, say rotate.bin (compiled within Bascom AVR),
and select write buffer into flash ROM, nothing happens. It says
'programming chip', but the screen doesn't change and nothing happens. It
will stay there all day if I let it.

If I hold a multimeter between pins 18-25 (ground) and pins 0 through 5,
there is a 50 mV difference. If I go to the File menu and select 'Test'
for pins 2, 4, 5, and 11, I find that pin 4 becomes about +4.1 Volts.
Selecting 'reset' puts it back to 0.05.

I have no idea how to program these chips. This is driving me insane.

Richard,
Just a thought, I'm sure you have tried everything, but by any chance did
you try the 'Auto program' button in BASCOM-AVR? I had a similar problem
with the SYK300 and an AT103L, pressing the 'send buffer to chip' button did
not do the job. However, when I used the auto-program button everything
worked.

Richard,
I had the same thing happen to me and found it to be one of my cables not
attached correctly. I do not remember if it was the LPT or COMMPORT, but it
was definitely a cable problem. The key message is that it does not
recognize the chip. I hope this is helpful.
