I'm afraid Robs' correct. There is no SimmStick design contest this year.
For various reasons we elected to give the contest a miss this year.
Hopefully it will be resurrected in 2002.
Stay tuned.....

Hi Guys,

Yes it is true, the SimmStick dealers have decided to not to have
a contest this year. We may have one next year but it hasn't been settled
on yet.

I'm sorry we haven't taken care of that yet, I thought we had. I
don't see it in the B/O folder so I'm not sure what happened. We'll send

America Under Attack!

Hi gang,
sounds like a spam heading doesn't it?

I am sitting here watching live pictures come in from New York and
Washington that I am finding hard to believe. 15:00 GMT at the moment.

The attacks took place at 09:30 to 10:00 local time.

I have just seen both towers of the World Trade center seem to vanish
into their foundations, and the Pentagon opened up.

This appears to be as a result of 3 planes crashing into these
"targets"?
Also a report of a 747 crashing at Pittsburgh Pennsylvania.
Numerous other reports are coming in.

All aircraft in the US have been grounded.

I can only hope and pray that all my friends in the US, and their
families are safe and well.

Don,

Yes this looks horrifying. I am in North Dakota, almost as
far from New York as Australia. My wife knows people that
were likely in the towers.

The first plane was at 8:42 east coast time, IIRC. The
continental US has 4 time zones. This would be 5:42 by the
time you get to our California coast.

The towers have fifty thousand people working in them. This
happened before the 9:00 start of day. My guess (only a
guess) is that more than 20,000 people have died.

I cannot even express emotion.

Subject: Re: Electro static problems

Dear Alan
The answer to the problem was to use a PLC.
We fitted ground wires to each component on the system. On the already grounded flexible transfer lines we fitted ground
wires on each end and the problem was fixed. Unfortunately we can not sell the system with ground wires hanging off from
everywhere. The customer later on admitted that his factory grid has a bad ground system and problems were encountered
before. It was not possible for me to modify the PIC circuit in a short time and a neat way to isolate all in and
outputs.
We tested a PLC on the system and it appears to work without problems.
The PIC circuit will be worked on later on.

Hi all,

Just got the digest version of this list.

I'm 200 miles from NYC and the 4th plane that went down crashed about 40
miles from my home town.

Apparently this 4th plane crashed when the passengers realized what the
hijackers were planning and attacked the hijackers. One of the passengers
cell phoned his wife and mother to tell them of the passenger plan to
re-take the plane and say goodbye.

These are truly extraordenary times we live in.

  I don't have a complete answer. However, I'm interested
in working with anyone with an interest in serial buses,
especially since noticing a huge speed enhancement possibility
when differential loops (4 io pins) are used instead of
single-ended (2 io pins).
  Please review this concept --

Subject: RS232 problems

Bellow is a part of a program that was written for 16F876
The 16F876 is on a dt106 with a 4Mhz crystal and a Max 232

During the program development pins B6 and 7 were used for
communication. (Didn't have a 232 chip on hand.) Every thing was
working normal written like this:

#use rs232(baud=9600, xmit=PIN_B6, rcv=PIN_B7, invert) // instr. com.
port

The program development was finished and a RS232 chip was installed on
the board.

The program was changed to this:

#include <16F876.h>
#include <string.h>
#include <stdlib.h>
#use standard_io(A)
#use standard_io(B)
#use standard_io(C)
#use delay (clock= 4000000)

#FUSES XT,WDT
#define store PIN_B0
#define read PIN_B1

// global variables to select different memory allocations for each
setpoint

 int ma,mb,mc,md; // meomory addresses
 char prod;
 char ID ;

/****************************************************************************************

First read product ID and allocate the memory area
****************************************************************************************/

prod_id()

{

 #use rs232(baud=9600, xmit=PIN_C6,rcv=PIN_C7) // instr. com. port

 int string[25]; // define array
     etc.

The transmit C6 works but I can not receive on C7.

Also the #use rs232 line above can not be inverted. The compiler spits
the dummy.

I would appreciate if someone could tel me how to get the RS232
communication C6,C7 set up properly.

When you selected pins on port B, the compiler chose to use
software delays and port i/o to implement serial
communication. When you use these specific pins the compiler
chooses to use hardware (SCI) to implement serial
communication. You can not use the INVERT directive with the
hardware implementation.

As far as why it doesn't work? Not sure.

Have you defined a baud rate/parity? Are you using
interrupts? Is your watchdog biting? There is a RESTART_WDT
option for #use rs232. Try turning the WDT timer off in your
#FUSES command.

Hi Mac, I have started selling these at an alarming rate of knots, and
like you, would love to see some user feed back, good, bad, or
otherwise. As I sold my first one only a month ago, I guess it is a
little early.

I can only say that no news is good news at this stage.

Subject: Raver problem - DT-006

I have the DT006 assembled but haven't been able to get the RUNAVR
project to recognize the chip. Because of this, it won't program.

I have written Mark at BASCOM and apparently all my settings are
correct and so is the cable and PC/BASCOM configuration. On my
laptop, the 2nd PC I have tried, I have no printer installed in
Windows and the LPT is an ECP type with address 3BC. I have checked
the cable with a VOM and verified that it is a straight through cable
with no unconnected pins.

The programmer shows two LEDs lit up when I power it with a 9V
battery or a 12V wall wart, both DC of course. I measure 5v at the
voltage regulator output. The two LEDs are apparently no.s 5 and 6 -
the two in the middle of the row closest to the 1000 OHM resistor
network - although in my case I am using individual 1000 ohm
resistors stood on end.

I have tried both a 4 MHz 90S2313 with crystal and a 10 Mhz 90S2313
with crystal. These are both new and from different suppliers with
different date codes beginning with 01. My caps are 22pf ceramic
types. When I plug in the parallel port cable, a straight connected
25 pin /25 pin type, I get different LEDs lit up on the other row -
the one closest to the jumper block.

Can some patient soul give some more troubleshooting tips?

Other notes:

No SIMM sockets are installed or soldered
I have the MAX232 chip installed and it tested ok on hyperterm/COM2
I installed machine pin sockets for the MAX232, the 8 pin position,
the 20 pin position and the 28 pin position. Only the MAX232 and
AT90S23213 are installed. Chips were installed after soldering and
were new when installed, oriented correctly from the start.
Latest ver. of BASCOM was used.

J10 Same as for J9 but carries TX and alternative path is to D1.

you don't mean J1, the 10 pin header. If so, yes, however there must be
a little conditioning of some lines to do this.

the microchip specs tell you, but I know it can be hard to find.
piclist.com may be the best info.

Hi,

 I did try ISCP with DT106 but not with DT001, isn't DT001 a programmer
already?

It is through the 10 pin connector on DT106, J4 in DT106.

 1. From the PIC-ICD I crimped a 5 pin connetcor, and another 5 pin
connector in DT106. In between is a light and flat telephone 6 wire cable.
Make sure the length is long enough for the development work, but not
 excessively long.

 2. I used a single row 5 pin strip on J4 so as to make plugging and
unplugging easier as you would doing a lot during development.

 3. First, when I did a direct wire without conditioning. I brunt out the
78L12 in the ICD after a few times. It never happen after that though. I
would suggest to put 470 ohm resistance on MCLR, RB7, and RB6 lines.

 4. Putting capacitance might fail the ICSP timing spec. so be aware of
that.

 5. Last beware where your 5V is coming from when doing ICSP.

 Cheers, Ling SM

Hi Gang, I know sep-11 events have left most of us still shocked, and I
haven't posted anything on this list since then, so best I catch up to

Hi all,

I have just got a DT006 up and running and I was wondering what would be the
first/easiest project for me to try out? Any suggestions or urls etc...
would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Subject: DT001 Programmer

Recently I took out my DT001 programmer to program one PIC 12C508A.
When I connected the programmer to the parallel port and turned it on
the VPP and VDD light also came up along with the PWR and 5V LEDs. I
fired up the P16Pro and tried to read the PIC in the socket the VPP
and VDD LEDs turned off.

I'm using a DELL machine. Maybe the parallel port dosen't initialize
corectly.

Anyone had same problem?

Is it possible to make a universal programmer like DT001 without a
7407 and using couple of more transistors. I have seen several David
Tait's programmers, but will they program all serially programmed
PICs.

Thanks.

Subject: troubleshooting a new DT001

Hi all, this is my first post here.

I hope somebody can help me, I am having some trouble getting my DT001 to
program a pic16f84.
I (think I) can see the programming data being transmitted by watching pin 1
of the 10-pin programming header (see below), but any value read from the
pic is always 0x3fff program or 0xff data, even when the DT111 is removed
from slot 1

Perhaps somebody could suggest other points on the dt001 to observe with the
oscilloscope, to try and clarify the cause of the problem?

I hope somebody can shed some light on the subject,

Regards, Tim

Here's some info about my setup, I hope it's useful

Computer Hardware
it's a pentium pro, 200mhz I think.
parallel port is on a circa-1992 controller card

Computer Software
 - running p16pro shareware version 3.64
 - running win98, have tried in dos, and dos window modes
 - have had less luck with picall v10a, perhaps it recognises read values
are not valid data, whereas p16pro is happy if they match the buffer

P16pro config:
device - pic16f84 (device 4)
fuses - XT, no wdt, no pwrt, no code protect

DT001
checked the soldering
parallel cable is a 1m manufactured(non-ribbon) cable
power feed is +18v DC, rated to 1 amp

DT111
checked soldering
installed r1, r2, r3, c1, c2, pic, xt, c3, c4
tried substituting fresh pic

Following information is from an oscilloscope during programming atempts,
ground reference taken from DT001 (reset switch pin)
 - +5v simmbuss line remains fixed at 5 volts
 - with 4pdt switch in load position, pin 1 of the 10 pin programming header
is at 5 volts, and switches between levels of 5,1 and 0 volts during
programming attempt

Might be the communication between the PC and the DT001. Also try a
new 7407.

Hi Tim,

Are you getting an error when you try writing to the Pic? Have you tried
placing a pic in the Zif socket on the DT001 and setting the switch to Load?

When I initially built my DT001 I used a female DB25 instead of a male
because I had one on hand along with a parallel male to male cable. This
caused writing errors to occur, yet my software would seemingly read a pic.
Guess what, all 03FF's .... I made a little jumper box instead of purchasing
a new cable and connector for a quarter of the cost of the cable alone and
it all works fine now.

Forget the DT101 in slot 1 for now. Try the onboard ZIF first. I'd recommend
Nigel Goodwin's PicProg V1.71b 32bit programmer. Runs a treat under Win98
and is really easy to set up with the DT001.

Let us know how you go.

Sherm
