John Dunkley of South Australia has been developing a full size 747
Flight simulator for some time now.

Quoted from John's page at:

How would you like your very own motion flight simulator at home? This
web site explains the methods I am using to construct a motion-based
Flight Simulator in my garage at home.

After chatting with John, Dontronics was pleased to donate some gear to
assist John with his development.

AVR hardware can be seen in detail at:

and the software John used was the very popular Bascom-AVR from MCS
Electronics.

In one word: WOW!

And you, Don, plan to build something similar? Quite some project...

Hi Alex,

I had such plans long time ago, made a working proto with
AVR + USB9602 from NS, then my computer was in fire and lost
those sources, and guess what found again two days ago!
I also did want to use the special AVRUSB chip got the development
board and stuff but the AVR silicon was buggy then :( so cancelled
that development.

I do have a FTDI based simmstick (no AVR on board) and I can agree
FT232AM is the easiest way to go really.

so just adding the FTDI reference circuitry to any AVR simmstick
would do the trick

I think so Alex, no personal experience, but I have asked my AVR guru
dealer Lars, and he will get back to us.

He has a board:
http://www.lawicel.com/staver/
that I think will use both.

also it would mean that the dt107 board would be OK also.

Cheers Don...

from Lars:
Yes, Mega8 is pin compatible, so yes.

so it should work in the dt107 and dt006

any feedback welcome

Subject: problem with DT001 - Nigel Goodwin program - flashing lights

I have recently bought and assembled a DT001 development board and
16F84 pic micro for a school engineering project. I am having
trouble writing Nigel Goodwin flashing lights software to chip.

When the development board is powered up (I have tried 2 * 9 volt
batteries and power supply) The PWR led, 5v led, tx led all turn on
at full strength and VDD turns on at half strength.

The Goodwin software is talking to printer as port $378 is registered.

When I try to download the flashing light program the following
occurs.

Programming ... Writing program data : 0 Programming Failed Verify
failed
Verifying ... Verify program data : 0 Program Verify Failed!
Blowing Fuses to 03FF1 ...
Fuse Failure Config Fuses, verify failed!
Total time 0.83 secs.

Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I'm not sure how much Nigel has gone into help text for users, so I'll
approach it from the P16pro method.

It either works or it doesn't when you build it.

If it doesn't you need to go into the help files and try checking your
voltages first.
get the file picallw.exe from the links at p16pro(.html), and read the
on line help text regarding initial checks.

also check your cable. Is it a straight through 25 wire to 25 wire?

Cheers Don...

FWIW, I can confirm that Analog Devices, Maxim and TI are very good with
samples. ADI is giving away samples of their latest 16-bit ADSP-2191 DSP, I
got a couple. I'll have to see if I can get a couple of SHARCs out of them.

It should be noted that Analog Devices ships by UPS, so Canadians (where
my experience lies) get surprised with a $35 brokerage fee for two
chips. Just something to keep in mind.

In the UK the request is passed on to ADI UK and delivery is free.

Hi

I have been trying to use 2 x DT106 with the 40 pin PICs to communicate - one as master the other as slave.

It is nearly working! however the data rceived at the slave PIC sometimes gets shifted by 1 or 2 bits to the left.

Any ideas as to how this can be cured? - I have a 10k pullup on the clock line at the moment.

Hi Don,

I got my mega8's and they seem to work ok in the DT006.

I just plugged it in and tweaked a BASCOM-AVR sample to print on the LCD and UART and it seems to work.

I just used the default 1MHz onboard clock - until I can work out the fuse settings to change it!!!

It was a bit of a pain working out the port pin mappings to SIMMStick D0..D14 lines - shame the mapping is not as tidy as the 2313 or 8535, but it does go!

Cheers

I have connected the SDI of one to the SDO of the other and vice versa with no pull-ups. The SCK connected together with a 10k pull up on the line.

I am trying the software with no Slave select line and Osc/16. I know the master SPI works as I have written and read from a memory 25LC640 chip which works fine.

I have set the TRIS regs one each so what is output on the master is input on the slave and checked for any conflicts on the bus.

It appears that it is a transmission problem that the start bit or 2 is getting lost!

Hope this helps.

SPI, it's in the Subject. 8-)

How far apart are they? It could be noise if you are trying to communicate
between separate systems connected by cables.

I've used SPI between a PIC and several AVRs without any problems, and
between a PIC and SPI UARTs. They were on the same PCB, though.

They are on two separate simmsticks 4 slots apart but I have had to do some "knitting" on the back of the slave board as u have to cut the SDI and SDO tracks and reverse them.

It works OK for a few chars then it starts to shift the char recd 1 bit to the left. Once it has started this it continues to do it!

"knitting" on the back of the slave board as u have to cut the SDI and SDO
tracks and reverse them.

Should be OK. Have you tried slowing the clock? Also, make sure you haven't
got any dodgy solder joints.

I use a little PCB I've made with a 74HC595 (it's SPI-compatible) with LEDs
on the outputs to debug SPI masters. Once I know the master is working
properly I can go ahead with the slave(s).

OK, Great!
thanks Alex, I'll put a little note on the dt006 page.

I just got some 12F675's (Flash) and was wondering if anyone has
programmed them with the PICALLw software. Bojan Dobaj has specific
support for 12CE6XX parts but not the 8 pin flash parts, which are
rather new. I have not really spent any time looking into the
Device.ini file that is can be modifies to add new parts ( so I have
read). Anyway if anyone has any ideas any help is appreciated.

Don,

Regarding your little job, the easiest way to do it is in perl. I can do it
for free , but it will be a basic perl script which you will call from the
command line. Tell me if you're interested.

Thanks very much Dan, and everyone else.
Twas the quickest I have got anyone to do anything.
Quicker than when my wife asks me to but the garbage out. :-)

Brill Pappin has offered to do it for me, and I have accepted. (for
barter)

I am also after a Web CGI/perl/database programmer. I have a serious job
I want done some time in the future, that involves a web based member
database paid membership, plus two information data bases. selling info
to paid members.

nothing to do with electronics, for my real, real, retirement when I am
seventy. :-)

Cheers Don...
