The chip likely won't have an ID of FFFFFF, so it sounds like a comm problem
to me... Have you tried the serial connection instead? (I always use
serial), and it works fine for me (though that won't help you)... also, make
sure you have Bascom set up correctly.

Of course, there could be a problem with the way you put the board
together... do what you can to trace the signals.

I have put together my DT006 and checked the voltages on the chip, it came
out at 4.99V.
I then plugged it up with a straight through parallel cable, and tried to
upload the DT006 program from bascom and it always says "Cannot Identify
Chip with ID: FFFFFF". When i verify the chip the light flash's but nothing
comes of it?!?
any ideas?
thanks

each cap has to connect from ground (center pin) to each side of the
resonator.
If you don't have the caps connected correctly it will not work.

this is detailed in full at:

Only the parallel port is used for programming the dt006
Serial is for comms.

If you have access to a oscilloscope, I would troubleshoot with that,
otherwise, you can make a logic probe that will catch pulses with a 4001 and
some resistors/caps. I would strongly suggest doing this and using it to
troubleshoot. I can provide you with a circuit if you want.
You really need atleast a logic probe to test anything like this.

http://www.mitedu.freeserve.co.uk/Circuits/Testgear/lprobe.html

You build this as a stand alone unit and it does not hook up to your
computer, it's purpose is to check what logic level (high or low) an output
of a circuit is. This one has what's called a pulse detector. You can not
see an LED turn on and then off if the pulse is only 5ms wide, this circuit
catches those short pulses and turns the LED on when it's detected. This is
probably the best little thing you can have next to a multimeter and doesn't
cost what an oscilloscope costs. (However nothing beats having an
oscilloscope on your bench or available to you for troubleshooting
everything having to do with electronics!)

As for the circuit you are working on, is this the first circuit you have
ever soldered together? Are you fairly new to soldering? If so, you
really need to look at some good soldering resources.... I know, it looks
easy, but if you haven't taken the time to read some resources or do some
simple soldering excercises, it can be your downfall.

The other thing to do is take the board to someone who knows about
electronics, just to look it over, or just to a friend, maybe they will see
something you don't. I can't tell you how many times I've banged my head
against the wall for hours only to find I forgot something simple or
overlooked one little thing!

Yes, It is all covered in the instructions on the dt006 pages in minute
detail.
The setup is gone through step by step.

I have already been through this with Dean, I think he really needs
someone to assist him.

As I will be away for 3 weeks starting next week, I suggested he ask on
this list.

hehe yeah i have it powered up
but it is all ok now, i found that one of the parallel lines was not getting to the chip because a track had not been printed correctly. There was a space in between the tracks and therefore not allowing the signal to go through. I just bridged it with a piece of wire and all is ok!
thanks everyone for your help :D

The U401 is a USB solution that is pre-built, pre-programmed, and
pre-tested and will get you interfacing your PC to various devices in
very little time! There is no USB device assembly, no driver
development, and no firmware to write. In many cases the U401 can be
plugged into an experimenter's breadboard and circuit interfacing can
begin immediately. Demo software applications can be used "right out of
the box".

Subject: DT001. DT106. 16F877. Ouch.

Hi All,

I'm having troubles ( like so many before me ) getting things
working with the items mentioned in the subject field. I'll try to
isolate things out for you.

Problem: DT106 in slot 1 of DT001 will not programme PIC16F877.
Software: Nigels most excellent WPicProg877 V1.71

The other info:

1. The DT001 will programme ( quite happily ) a 16F84 in the onboard
ZIF, and also in a DT101 in slot 1 using the above mentioned
software. So the DT001 is most likely not to blame.

2. The 16F877 can be successfully written to, read back, verified
and erased with the picall Kit-144 hardware. So I'm assuming the 877
is also okay.

3. There is nothing else connected to the DT106 during the
programming cycle, although I am looking forwards to linking it off
to the header on the SimmBuss for future project development.

4. When you try reading the 877 in slot 1, PicProg returns all
3FFF's except in position 0 which sometimes returns 3FFE.

5. When I try to write to the pic I get an error "Program Verify
Failed on Line 0, Programming Aborted!" I get the same error with a
DT101 and 16F84 if I don't have the power switched on to the DT001.
The power IS on though when I get this error with the 877.

6. Reading or erasing the 877 does not result in an error message.
It is clear however that when reading the device, the correct
information is not returned. I burnt the 877 with Picall and then
tried reading it back through DT106 and PicProg.

7. I even tried making up a short ribbon cable and using J1 on the
DT001 to code with same results.

My two cents: I think it is going to be something really simple. I'm
left questioning the following items in no particular order...
The configuration settings for WPicProg. Could these need to be
different for the DT106? I don't see how but I can't be certain
either. The DT106 track integrity. I've gone over it again and again
but can see nothing out of place. I've even hardwired the
programming pins from the 40 pin socket ( solder side in case you
thought I'd gone completely insane ) to the appropriate simm socket
pins. I thought there may have been a broken track that I couldn't
see. No luck there of course.

I've gone back through all of the previous DT106 issues in the
archives here but everyone else seemed to have slightly different
problems.

If anybody is using the same setup as this can I get your config
settings or any other ideas you may have to solve this problem?

I think I covered everything. Thanks in advance.

I had a similar problem programming the 16F628 with the JDMprog circuit
which worked OK with the 16F84.

Pin 10, RB4/PROG needed to be grounded. When I did this with a small mod to
my PCB the 16F628 programmed without any problems. You probably need to do
the same.

Hi Leon,

Thanks for your response. I can't see how that will help though. Pin
10, RB4 maybe valid on a 16F84 but that isn't my issue. My problem
is with the 16F877 which has a different pin arrangement all
together. I think you may have modded your DT101 or 111.

Thanks anyway. Anyone else? Don? Help :-)

Still frustrated,

Subject: DT106 boards or kits available in US?

I'm looking for 2 or 3 DT106 boards or with parts (except the PIC877A) but
can't find any at Vikon (website says new store coming for last several
months but it hasn't) or Kronos (out of stock).

Are the DT106 and/or the PIC 877A still popular or not?

Is there a USA source for DT106?

I'm trying to quickly experiment with a little Java subset in the 877A from
http://www.muvium.com/

If necessary we could design our own board (it would not be a clone of
DT106 but would have other features).

Thanks

Hey Don!
What's the chance of developing a simm stick that uses the new SST
serial FLASH memory chips (www.ssti.com). This would be a fantastic
addition to the simm stick range.

Paul.

Hi Sherm,

there is a lot of extra data on the dt106 page as far as user feed back
is concerned.
There are no secrets to the DT106 or 877 programming. it has been
working fine for years now.

Good luck with it. Sorry I can't provide any more for you.

BTW.
I'll be on vacation for 3 weeks starting in a few hours.

I sell boards from here in Australia, delivery is normally about 6 to 8
days, postage is free on PCB's only, as long as the value is $20AUD or
more.

I can post these off in an Air mail letter if it is boards only.

I do have other dealers in the states, check my dealer page.
http://www.dontronics.com/dealer.html and check to see if other dealers
carry them in stock by all means.

Hi Paul,
Like all these things, if enough people show an interest, I'll try and
do something about it.

Interesting devices.

I've just ordered samples. If they materialise, I'll put one on a SIMMstick.

I just had a phone call from SST (UK) about the SST serial flash samples
I've ordered. They are getting a couple each of the 1Mbit and 2Mbit devices
(SOIC package) for me, and I should have them in about a week. Price is
under 80c for 25,000 off.

The 8Mbit and 16Mbit versions aren't available yet.

As soon as I get them I'll put one on a PCB that can be attached to a DT208
for testing with an AVR SIMMstick. I'll also try one with a PIC 16F628, as
it has an SPI port. I've got a few non-Simmstick applications in mind for
them.

Apart from Paul Munday, who originally mentioned these on the list, is
anyone else interested?

I'm interested; are you planning on a dedicated 'Stick for them, or just
incorporating them onto another uC carrier? I'd rather the fomer, as I'm not an
AVR guy, and I'm a big fan of modularity. Just my $0.02.

Yes, the former. Although it will look a bit silly with just one little SOIC
chip on it. I might as well lay the PCB out for several chips.
