Part numbers please? Are these the 25 series?

Atmel DataFlash are also very similar, such as AT45D161 (16 mbits), we have
used the smaller parts such as AT45D041 (4 mbits). I wrote a whole assy
code interface including the double buffering, etc and it was successfully
used in a medical datalogging project a few years ago.

MMC is also very SPI like. We are planning a JSimm/SimmStick product with
dual MMC slots which can hold 64/128 MBytes each.

Yes. I don't have the part numbers, haven't even got any data yet.

That's good news.

Yeah, it would look a bit silly for just one or two ICs; maybe you could put
down a pattern or two for traditional SPI/I2C thru-hole EEPROMs? There must be
something else to fill that space! (I know, that's a crazy thing to say about
PCB layout!)

As soon as I get them I'll put one on a PCB that can be attached to a DT208
for testing with an AVR SIMMstick. I'll also try one with a PIC 16F628, as
it has an SPI port. I've got a few non-Simmstick applications in mind for
them.

Apart from Paul Munday, who originally mentioned these on the list, is
anyone else interested?

Leon,

I was thinking of picking up a sample or two to attach to the U401 (USB to SPI), because there is an unpopulated place on the U401 PCB for a SPI memory device with the same pin-out. The only trouble is that I anticipated a 5V source for the serial device.

If you make a SimmStick-type of board that has this footprint, you should make the Vcc selectable either from the 5V of the SimBus or a 3.0 - 3.3V regulator.

Newbie question about programing a simmstick basic stamp as a datalogger (that is all I want it for). Is it easy enough to program (my BASIC is very elementary), or is there likely to be a program already  written that I can modify.

Do you know the fastest sampling rate? I want to measure voltage between 0 and 5V, do you know how many samples I can record with 16K of memory.

I've just received two of the SST flash devices I'd requested from SST
(UK) - the 1 Mbit ones. I'll get the 2 MBit ones in a few days.

I managed to drop both of them on the floor, it's rather difficult to find
8-pin SOICs on a patterned carpet. 8-(

I'll be trying the device out with a 16F628 at 3V, with a serial I/F to the
PC. I'm hoping the MAX202 will work at 3V, I've heard of other people using
them at low voltage. I'll bit-bang the flash initially, and then swap things
round so that I'm bit-banging the serial interface and using the 16F628 for
the SPI to the flash chip.

Subject: MSP430 SIMMstick

I've come across a PCB supplier in the Czech Republic who should be able to
make SIMMsticks quite cheaply - 1.2 mm thickness FR4 is one of their
standard materials. I think the standard SIMMstick thickness is 1.26 mm, but
it should be OK.

I've therefore decided to resurrect my MSP430 SIMMstick project. I should
have a working prototype tomorrow using a home-made single-sided PCB
attached to a DT208 bus adaptor. Height of the prototype is 40 mm, it just
came out that way.

I'm using the MSP430F1121 chip as they seem reasonably easy to get hold of,
and offer a good selection of features. Provisionally, the unit will have
it's own LDO 3.3 V regulator, connected to the +5 V SIMMstick bus supply
line. Of course, there is a connector for the JTAG programming interface,
and all the I/Os are brought out to the SIMMstick bus connections. The clock
is a 3.58 MHz ceramic resonator, as this frequency is used by TI in many of
their app. notes. There is a breadboarding area occupying about 50% of the
PCB.

I'm open to suggestions, so get in touch if you have any comments, or any
features you would like incorporated. Initially, the intention is to produce
a very low-cost product with the bare minimum of features. I can produce
later versions with more 'bells and whistles'.

I've just put together my prototype MSP430 SIMMstick and downloaded a test
program to it. The actual chip I'm using on the prototype is the bottom of
the range MSP430F110. It's pin-compatible with the 'F1121 I intend to use on
the production version.

I'll have some pics of the prototype and the schematic and PCB details on my
web site later today:

http://www.geocities.com/leon_heller/simmstick.html

If anyone wants to see what MSP430 code looks like, here's the test program:

It uses the WDT to flash an LED on P1.0. Clock source is the internal 800

development software.

Hi folks

I have an application for a datalogger and really do not have the time
to develop it (and there is probably someone who have done it already).

What I am looking for is a few 2 channel, 0-5V 12 bit A-D dataloggers
with storage for a few hundred datasets, complete with PC software. I
have seen a few with more than 2 channel (and hence more $) and some
which are only 8 bit or 0-2.5V, but nothing that fits the bill.

Does anyone know of anything that comes close to this spec, or there
someone who would be willing to talk to me about doing it for a price?

Thanks, Don,

I've got a link to you on that page, also. The PCB supplier I'm thinking of
using if I go ahead with it can do 1.2 mm thickness. Will that be OK in the
sockets? I think the official thickness is 1.26 mm.

Lynndon,

I could probably do this for you quite reasonably. I've already done
something similar (without storage) with one channel and 10 bits, using an
AVR 2313 with an ADC, as an experimental geophone interface connected to a
PC via RS-232. It's in connection with an intrusion monitoring system I'm
developing that uses an MSP430, geophone/magnetometer and radio link at each
node.

Presumably you want it battery-powered? I'd use an MSP430 in that case. It's
a pity that the on-chip ADC is only 10 bits, so we'd have to use external
ones.

Regards,

Thanks for the offer.

A bit more info, but please reply to my email not simmstick board otherwise
Don might get a bit miffed.

The units will be used for recording temperature reading on a pipeline test
where we have to record temperatures hourly for a minimum of 24 hours at a
number of points along the pipeline. This is usually in a remote location
and my ToneSCADA project was an attempt to do it on-line, but for a series
of tests coming up in about 6 weeks, we will have to have up to 12
locations which defeats the number of ToneSCADA units I have available.

I used the LTC1298 A-D chip in my project which is 2 channel, 12bit and it
worked great with the 2313 DT104 ToneSCADA.

The datalogger units would definitely have to be battery powered and have a
pretty rugged enclosure.

The specs are:

2 channel, 0-5V A-D, 12 bit (Probes put out 0-4V actually and I just shift
the decimal to get degC, ie 2.375V = 23.75degC. The second decimal of
temperature is important, hence the 12bit.

Enough data storage and battery life for a few days of readings.

A unit ID stored in the downloaded data so I can differentiate one site
from another.

PC download hardware and software.

An optional wishlist would be a data shuttle, ie a datalogger that you take
to each site, download the data, and then upload all the into the PC, thus
saving having to take the PC on a sometimes quite bumpy drive, or bring the
dataloggers back to base for data extraction. The problem with removing
dataloggers in order to download is that the data is used in evaluating the
test and depending on the result, we may have to extend the test which
means replacing the dataloggers back again. Also a shuttle would enable
data extraction and test evaluation at convenient intervals during the test.

Everything is finished but unfortunately so is our microprocessor.
One of the output pins came in contact with 14V and it has passed

Hi Folks if somebody needs a JTAGICE then it can be made
at home from ATmega163 (or Atmega16)

description howto can be found at

and yes it really works and is exactly as JTAGICE :)

P.S. I made it for my birthday - saved me 299USD at least.

Subject: MSP430 SimmStick update

I've just tidied up my home-made MSP430 SimmStick PCB. Based on a TI app.
note (SLAA104) I've implememented a 12-bit sigma-delta integrating ADC using
just a 470k resistor and a 47 nF capacitor on the prototyping area, with
some software. It's working OK, and although rather slow, is ideal for
applications involving the measurement of slowly-changing values like
temperature and pressure. It could form the basis for a very low-cost and
low-power data logger.

I've updated my web page with details of the new version:

http://www.geocities.com/leon_heller/simmstick.html

Anyone interested in a commercial version of this SimmStick? All that is
needed for development are the free software tools from TI and a Flash
Emulation Terminal (about $10) for debugging and program loading.

Just out of interest what do you use to make the pcb's
and what program for cad and artwork ?

Was it you that had the cpld simmstick ?

Isn't there a gcc port for the msp chips ?

I use Pulsonix. It's a very nice mid-range new(ish) package. You can get a
100 pin demo:

http://www.pulsonix.com

They have just released the new Version 2 software, which I've been
beta-testing for the last few months.

Yes, that was me. I like doing things no-one else has done just for the hell
of it. 8-)

Yes. It seems to work quite well. I prefer assembler. There are several
commercial C compilers for it around: IAR, Imagecraft, Rowley/Softbaugh.
I've tried them all but I don't really know how they compare. I like the
Imagecraft one, because Richard Man is very good on support.
