Hope your Christmas went well. Although there hasn't been a lot to report, we have been kept busy. I had to go back to doing sales, while my daughter Sharon presented us with a new grand son on the 28th of December. Our Newsletter in the very near future, will move from Bcentral, a Micro$oft product, to Mailman, which is run from our web host. This is the same system that our SimmStick Chat group uses. We will simply make it a one way messaging system, the same as the existing Newsletter. This news report is being sent to both the Newsletter and SimmStick group. We have really got on top of our previous spam problem now. To remind you all, our email addresses will move from 2003 to 2004 today. Hope to catch you all at some time in the new year. Cheers Don... ===== Edition 53 Newsletter To Here 1-Jan-2004 ====== 1-Jan-2004 PIC P16Pro Software Registration We have sold this product for Bojan Dobaj (Slovenia) since 1998, and several times we have lost contact with him due to email problems. As we have not had contact with him now for nearly a month, we feel it is very unfair to sell a product that appears to have no ongoing support, so we have stopped all sales. We have attempted to contact all listed resellers of P16PRO software and got only one message returned, but this was of no assistance to us. We apologize for this inconvenience, but hope you understand our policy. However, last time I think it was getting towards 3 months. For the semester just about to start(beginning of march) we are using 16f877's so can still use winpicprog but can save around AUs $2 - $3 per chip if we switch to the A version, just need software to support it. We need software that also supports 12f, 16c (usb chips) , 16f and 18f pics. We are using a modified in-circuit tait type programmer. We would prefer software we can either get the source and modify it ourseloves or get the mantainer to put the settings in for us. We need windows software as that is what most students use and is on the computers the uni has. (gnu pic works fine for the few students that use linux or mac) We've tried contacting the author of icprog with no sucess multiple times. Next option is to write a gui frontend to gnupic. Only pain is have to do this in my own time. Would anyone here know of other software that we can get settings put in (and the authors are contactable) or can get the sources for ? You can download the old 16 bit Delphi source code from Dontronics, but it only supports a limited number of chips. But the basics are there for you to improve as you want - I believe IC-Prog was based on this source?, it still includes the old dis-assembler unit from it (complete with my name on the source code generated). >Would anyone here know of other software >that we can get settings put in >(and the authors are contactable) >or can get the sources for ? Most 'serial port' programmers don't actually use the serial port, they simply 'wiggle' the handshake lines, just as parallel port programmers 'wiggle' the port pins. USB is a totally different beast, it requires a processor on the programmer to do the actually programming - all the PC section does is transfer the data, the processor does the rest. You can download all the source code and circuits for MicroChips new FLASH programmer, the PicKit1, from their website - if you want to make your own USB programmers, it's a very interesting resource. -- Nigel. /------------------------------------------------------------\ | Nigel Goodwin | E-Mail : nigelg@lpilsley.co.uk | | Lower Pilsley | Website : http://www.lpilsley.co.uk | | Chesterfield | Author of WinPicProg | | England | http://www.winpicprog.co.uk | \------------------------------------------------------------/ From alxx at ihug.com.au Thu Jan 29 01:20:51 2004 From: alxx at ihug.com.au (Alex Gibson) Date: Wed Jan 28 09:19:36 2004 Subject: [SimmStick_Group] Pic Programming software that supports A versions ? The lecturers preference is for 18f chips but that pushes the cost over the current allowed amount. Been having occassional port troubles. Seems winpicprog has conflicts on 1 in 20 other computers on windows xp(version 1.91, winxp sp1) still haven't been able to work out what the other software is but its happening on both my computers at home. Works fine under win98. But can't install win98 on sata hdd based systems. We have had problems with some students using winpicprog, it is to complex for them (can't read the documents or follow simple instructions, gets rather frustrating at times). Thats one reason we are looking at having our own program. Have all fuses in the hex file, then only have the pics we are using available for selection. With 4 buttons on the gui, erase ,blank check, program and verify. >> We are using a modified in-circuit tait type programmer. >> >> We would prefer software we can either get the source and modify it >> ourseloves or get >> the mantainer to put the settings in for us. > > > You can download the old 16 bit Delphi source code from Dontronics, but > it only supports a limited number of chips. I don't know delphi (been a while since I've used turbo pascal 7) but shouldn't be to hard to learn A delphi / kylix front end would be good. Thanks for that, hadn't seen the pickit1. I'll have to have a good look. We were thinking of using a 16f628 or 16f876 with ftdi chip(hopefully they will have released their usb2 full speed chip by the time we need it). I even infected my PC with one of them, out of curiosity, and it took me a couple of hours to get rid of it; NAV did some of the work automatically but I still had to mess about with the registry (Symantec has details on their web site) to do a full eradication. While my PC was connected to the internet I could see it pumping out emails from my system. The infected emails disappeared after a couple of days. Shame on you. zonealarm or kerio can block outgoing unauthorised traffic. Doesn't seem nearly as annoying as sven or swen. Had replys from a couple of software authors now, which is good. Has anyone heard any info on the pic 18f usb chips ? Looking around for usb2 full speed(480Mbps) capable chips. Don't need that speed just around 40 Mbps would be enough. Thanks Alex Gibson
