You have to read this very carefully.
It is allowing you to set two very different parameters.
1. Selects Default Windows Device. You should
leave this set where you first found it. This will more likely be a sound
card rather than a USB device. You can check your default settings by exiting
the control panel, then checking it again. If the USB device is set as
the default device, then you will have problems with what sounds are appearing
where.
2. You can also select a device to adjust
the Audio levels on. If you select a USB device but leave it as the default
device, and click on apply and OK, the USB device will be the default Windows
device.
So bare in mind that this Audio Properties
menu is allowing you to select a windows default device, and allowing you
to adjust audio levels on many devices.
If you get a little lost with this, unplug
your PhoneConnector, play an audio CD, and adjust your windows default
device, and audio settings to suit the one source first.
Now plug in PhoneConnector and set it up
again, but adjust for the new device as well.
echo-123
can be used as a test audio signal for setting up Skype and PhoneConnector.
If this fails, It may pay you to do a complete
new install. It isn't that difficult.
How
to uninstall the Windows Default USB driver
Remove and re-install
Skype and PhoneConnector:
Saving your Contacts
Some sound settings are saved by Skype
along with your contacts which is a crazy idea.
First thing you need to do is to get a
list of your contacts. From Skype, hover your mouse cursor over each user,
and you will see each users details. The first item in the list is the
user name. You only need the username. Write a list of these down. Perhaps
you can even create a text list such as:
C:\skype_username_contacts.txt
Skype should have something like this anyway,
so that they can be loaded and saved easily instead of hiding them in obscure
directories, and saving them with Skype settings.
Unplug PhoneConnector from your computer.
Start> Settings>
Control Panel> Add or Remove Programs>
Remove both Skype and PhoneConnector programs.
Windows Explorer>
Tools> Folder Options> View> Show Hidden Files and Folders.
This is where your user account settings
are stored on your hard drive:
C:\Documents
and Settings\Owner\Application Data\Skype\your_skype_user_name\config.xml
(this also has
some sounds settings, bad move by Skype)
This is where your skype program common
settings are stored on your hard drive:
C:\Documents
and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Skype\shared.xml
Make sure that all files are removed from
both of these sub-directories. If they aren't, then delete them.
Get the latest versions:
Download the latest version of Skype from:
http://www.skype.com/go/getskype
Download the latest version of PhoneConnector
from:
http://www.phoneconnector.com/download
You must un-install the previous PhoneConnector
program before doing this.
We suggest you save both of these files
as follows:
C:\My Download
Files\skype\SkypeSetup.1.0.0.106.exe
C:\My Download
Files\phoneconnector\phoneconnector.1.06.08.msi
The versions may have changed since this
was written, but the idea is to record the version number in the filename,
and to save the programs in a known location for future reference.
Here are some other Skype versions:
http://download.skype.com/SkypeSetup(1.0.0.18).exe
http://download.skype.com/SkypeSetup(1.0.0.29).exe
http://download.skype.com/SkypeSetup(1.0.0.97).exe
http://download.skype.com/SkypeSetup(1.0.0.100).exe
http://download.skype.com/SkypeSetup(1.0.0.106).exe
Details on all versions can be found at:

Re-install Skype and PhoneConnector:
Do a new install of Skype. You can open
your existing account with username and password, then add your contact
names.
You don't need to do anything but ask for
authorization from the contacts. If they were a previous contact, then
they will be automatically authorized when the user next comes on line.
If you are just installing Skype then all
you need to do is get into
Skype> File>
Options> Hand/Headsets, and set as per your manufacturers instructions.
This is generally something like USB Audio
Device for USB Phones.
Don't plug in PhoneConnector until the
software is installed.
Install the PhoneConnector program.
Plug in your PhoneConnector hardware.
If all is well, the PhoneConnector program
will ask for the application, which will be "Skype"
You can then set up options in Skype:
Skype> File>
Options> Hand/Headsets, and set to USB Audio Device.
Hopefully, your Skype/PhoneConnector installation
is now working.
All feed back welcome.

Gary very nicely explains his procedure
for reinstalling or upgrading Skype.
Additional PhoneConnector Trouble Shooting:
Unplug the USB cable out of PhoneConnector.
The status of the software should say "Plug in PhoneConnector".
And plugging it back in should make it go back to "On Hook".
This means the hardware is being recognized
by the software driver.
Do you have several USB ports, and can
try another? We have found that a poorly powered USB port may give problems.
Do you have an externally powered hub you can plug into and try it from?
Can you try it on another computer?
This may improve the quality
of your Skype Sound:
Check if you have MS "QoS
Packet Scheduler" installed on your PC.
Find it in: Start -> Connect to -> Show
All Connections
Right click on "Local Area Connection"
Select Properties -> General
Look for "QoS Packet Scheduler" and disable
it (remove tick from box) or just uninstall it.
Then reboot your system.
