This is a companion printed circuit board for Myke Predko's book:
Programming & Customizing PICmicro® Microcontrollers.

Please Note **** This product is only available as a bare board. You must get your own components as specified in the parts listed here in Excel format: yap2bom.xls

Yes, this is just a raw pcb and not the kit.  Wirz have been selling the kit so long, people may get confused.  You will need access to another PIC programmer to program the host PIC to get the board to work.  This is all covered in the book, but we feel it should be pointed out.

Board size is 4 x 6.5 inches.

We still get quite a few people who have read Myke Predko's book looking for the PCB's.

The YAP Development Board was originally designed for and featured in the extremely popular Programming & Customizing PICmicro® Microcontrollersr written by PICmicro MCU veteran Myke Predko. Myke has recently redesigned the YAP and released a second version known as YAP2. The new version offers an improved form factor with the bread board mounted directly on the PCB.

Programming & Customizing PICmicro® Microcontrollers provides the most detailed coverage of the Microchip PICmicro Microcontroller available, while still maintaining the reader's attention from beginning to end. The book stands out in providing both a text book style coverage of the fundamentals, followed by an extensive selection of user duplicable projects to reinforce the subject matter. The YAP Development Kit provides the tools and parts you need to perform these experiments and to gain hands on experience. Predko is well known and an active member of the PICmicro MCU community, and his book offers the reader the chance to glean from his vast experience.

Myke Predko Says:

"Programming & Customizing PICmicro® Microcontrollers was introduced with the idea that a book introducing new users to the Microchip PICmicro MCU should be given be guided through some low-level experiments and simple applications before going on to develop more complex applications. In Programming & Customizing PICmicro® Microcontrollers, I have included a chapter with thirty experiments to help the user to understand how the PICmicro MCU works as well as see how simple interfaces for the chip work.

To help the new user work through the experiments, I am pleased that Wirz Electronics is offering a complete kit of parts, centered around the "YAP" programmer which is featured in the book. This programmer is designed for interfacing directly to a "Breadboard" prototyping card to allow the user to wire the PICmicro MCU directly into an application without removing it from the programmer. This will allow the user to develop and wire applications without taking the PICmicro MCU from the programmer and circuit. All cables, Breadboard, parts and documentation are included with an assembled and tested YAP to allow you wire the YAP to your PC with a minimum of fuss and bother and run the experiments given in the book. This makes the kit ideal for new users that may not be familiar with electronic wiring or prototyping.

I am very pleased to offer this kit through Wirz Electronics. I have been associated with Wirz for a number of years and have been impressed with their dedication to their customers. This dedication has been rewarded with their phenomenal growth since their conception. I know that all questions and comments that you have will be answered quickly with the superior support that Wirz is famous for."

YAP2 Development Kit Features:

A PICmicro MCU Programmer, Power Supply and Breadboard for rapidly prototyping projects.  Over 35 different PICmicro MCU's are supported by the Windows software  including the PIC16C554, PIC16C74, PIC16C84, PIC16F84, and PIC16F877.  See the documentation for a complete listing.

The Development Kit is very complete. A 110 VAC power supply, RS232 Serial Cable, a PIC16F84 Microcontroller, a Large Bread Board Wire Assortment, and an assembled & tested Yap Development Board are included. The kit includes enough parts for working through all of the "Experiments" chapter of the Programming and Customizing the PICmicro® Microcontroller.

The YAP Development board will work with any computer or operating system which has an 9 pin RS232 Serial Port and Terminal Emulation Software.  A YAP2 Windows 95/98/NT/2000 Software, (Ver 0.8, 1.6 Mb) program is also available for free download.  Please download the documentation for software installation and setup information.

YAP-II PICmicro® MCU Development Kit FAQ

Will the YAP-II work with MPLAB, a C Compiler, or a Basic Compiler?

The YAP-II will work with any compiler or assembler that has a hex file output that is in the "Intel IHXMS16" Format. All of the assemblers, PicBasic and C Compilers that we have seen support this format. You should check with the manufacturer before buying. MPLAB and the YAP-II work fine together, you should load the hex file immediately before programming so the latest copy is used.
