Playstation Chip problems.
MICROCHIP ACKNOWLEDGES PROBLEM -- The chip fabrication process for the PIC12C508 and 12C509 underwent a change earlier this year. This has resulted in a problem for PIC users working time-critical applications on the internal-oscillator of the part. To be brief: the 4-wire version of the modchip made on PIC12C508/9 parts is not guaranteed to work on PICs with a date code of 9813 through 9830 (12C508), 9820 through 9830 (12C509) and factory code of "HAM". Even the vernier-calibration technique REI uses in the version of the code sold in REI mod chips cannot compensate for the problem. Since this is a fault in the chip fabrication process (it sounds like stray capacitance to REI) and not the program the chip runs, the only 100% solution at this time is to program chips in the 5-wire mode and use an external clock for these chips.

AN EXPERIMENTAL FIX for 4-wire chips date coded 9813 to 9830 is available here. The only caution is that this is experimental, and while reliable performance appears to be restored, it is not guaranteed. Those interested in trying the code fix can download it here.

Note that Microchip has gone back to the original fab for parts made after 9830, so PIC12C50x chips with a date code of 9831 or higher are not affected.

Above is the current information available from Scott Rider. Dontronics now has only PIC12C508 chips dated in the bad date codes shown above, so you will need to use the 5 wire circuit, or try Scott's experimental fix code available from his page, as I can't find out when new supplies of 508's will be available.

Current feedback tells me that this code is working, however like Scott, I can't and don't guarantee it. This is for the boot chip only. The color mod uses the external oscillator input, so all chips work for this mod.

If you have purchased blank chips from me, and haven't read this page, then I will refund your money on any new blank chips with the bad date codes. As this page is linked to my home page, and physically included with every PIC12C508 sold, I don't expect anyone to try to burn a chip without reading the above warning.

We are now selling the old stock of bad date code 508's for $2AUD each. Limited quantity.

I understand the experimental fix for the 508/9 bad date codes is now considered to be 100% safe.

Please Note **** Dontronics doesn't burn MOD Chips.
